Gabe Mio's Fundraiser: Brewbob's in White Lake
July 12, 2005
A hot Sunday afternoon, cool refreshing drinks, inflatable moonwalks and delicious barbecue; sounds like the perfect summer day. The only thing that made last Sunday even better was the fact that all of the proceeds from the day were going towards a great cause. Gabriel Mio is a seven year old boy living in Highland . Gabe has been recently diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, demanding a vast change in his life. Gabe is currently living in Highland and his family needs help in making their home barrier free. Our wonderful communities came together on Sunday the 17th to help them out.

Brewbob's in White Lake played host to this wonderful fundraiser, donating their facilities to the family for the day. Sponsors from around the area turned out including Brewbob's, the Home Depot, Applebee's, Nu-way Kitchen Supply, Duck Lake Pizza, El Patio Mexican Restaurant and others. Nu-way Kitchen Supply has already donated all of the barrier free fixtures necessary to fix up the Mio's home. Funds were being raised to make the Mio's home barrier free, including an addition onto Gabe's room providing a barrier free bathroom and a lift for wheelchair access. The plans for Gabe's room include a Tony Stewart Nascar theme. Plans have already been drawn up and approved by Highland Twp; building will begin as soon as enough money is raised to fund the project.

Heading the project is Gabe's uncle, Robert Spooner. Spooner is a captain for Rebuilding Together “Christmas in April”, a non-profit organization that helps out families in need. Rebuilding together has allowed Spooner to use their name and non-profit license in order to head this project for his nephew. Spooner hasn't worked himself in over three months, spending all of his time heading this operation. Other individuals have came forward as well. Once of Gabe's wishes is to go to Disneyland . An anonymous person donated tickets for the family to go on vacation. Feeling that finishing their home and preparing it to be barrier free for Gabe was more important than going on a vacation, the family turned down the trip. The anonymous donor then sold the tickets and gave the family $2500 to get started. It is people like that that prove our community can come together and do this project as one.

Another fundraiser is being held on August 7 th . This event includes a steak dinner and huge prizes at the door, including a plane ride and a seven foot pool table. The cost is $50/ person. For more information contact Robert Spooner @ (248) 431-6689. Any help for Gabe will be greatly appreciated.

There is also a benefit for Kidsafe, a non-profit organization that finds safe homes for orphans. This fundraiser will be held on August 29 th at Indianwood Golf Club in Clarkston.
